Tusk is in Brussels to attend the last European Summit of the year. His meeting with the prime ministers took place on the day following the Polish government adopting a number of resolutions on foreigners as part of the so-called migration strategy
"We are regaining control of the Polish borders, over the system of granting visas," he said on Wednesday evening before going to Brussels.
In addition to tightening the visa issuing system, the government wants to introduce the possibility of limiting applications for international protection, which is criticised by NGOs. According to Tusk, this move did cause concern in Brussels. At the previous summit in October, EU leaders were said to have expressed understanding for the perspective of Poland, whose eastern border is at the same time the EU's external border.
The conclusions of that summit said that Russia, Belarus, or any other country cannot abuse the right to asylum. Solidarity was also expressed with Poland and the EU member states facing the challenges associated with this.
Unlike Italy, which saw the EU migration pact as a success, the Polish government takes the view that the pact's provisions are not an answer to the current migration challenges, and has announced that it will not implement them. (PAP)
