The US Department of State has approved the sale of HIMARS lightweight mobile launchers to Poland, the Polish defence minister announced on Twitter on Friday.

HIMARS is highly-mobile artillery rocket system, with a range of up to 300 kilometres.

"This is a big step towards the conclusion of this contract, which is a breakthrough for the Polish army," the minister said.

The US Administration has approved the sale to Poland of 20 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) M142 Launchers, according to the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

The estimated value of the contract is USD 655 million. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency is responsible for the sale abroad of state-of-the-art weapons.

Poland sent a detailed order for HIMARS lightweight mobile launchers to the US in mid-October.

HIMARS, produced by Lockheed Martin, is a system of mobile launchers for GMLRS-U/AW and ATACMS munitions. HIMARS is planned as the base for the Polish Homar rocket artillery system. (PAP)
