Poland is the first country from Central and Eastern Europe to sit on the Council.
An agreement to this effect has been signed in New York by Poland's Investment and Development Minister Jerzy Kwiecinski and Lise Kingo, executive director of the United Nations Global Compact, a non-binding United Nations pact to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.
Minister Kwiecinski stressed that joining such a prestigious institution shows that Poland has an increasingly strong position in the world. It is the Council's 14th member and the first from Central and Eastern Europe, said the minister.
Kwiecinski added that by joining the UNGC Poland will be able to take advantage of UN funds. "Funds which the UN allocates each year for various activities around the world reach almost USD 19 billion (...)," said the minister and stressed that there are 40 UN agencies implementing the budget, but of key importance for companies is the UNGC.
