PGE Gornictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna signed a contract on Thursday with a General Electric-led consortium for the construction of two power blocks at the Dolna Odra Power Station in northwestern Poland, the companies have announced in a press statement.
The consortium comprises General Electric Global Services, General Electric International and the Polish company Polimex Mostosol.
The value of the contract and services is worth PLN 4.73 bln (EUR 1.10 bln).
The agreement concerns a "turn-key" project whereby two gas-steam blocks, with a gross electricity capacity of 683 MWe each, will be built at the Dolna Odra Power Complex, owned by PGE. The work is slated to be completed by December 11, 2023.
President Andrzej Duda said at the contract signing ceremony that this was a great step in the development and modernisation of the Polish energy sector.
"These blocks will have a guaranteed power supply, with a full diversification of supply sources. Gas supplies will come from various directions, and this will be a guarantee that this fuel will be delivered," said Duda.
He added that, in his opinion, the construction of new gas sources was also "a step in our climate policy." "This huge reduction of CO2 emissions, in comparison to coal blocks, corresponds with modern global and European policy. This is proof that we are actually implementing a climate protection policy," he said.
The signing ceremony was also attended by, among other officials, US ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher, Deputy Minister of State Assets Adam Gaweda, as well as local parliamentarians, representatives of local authorities and power plant employees. (PAP)
Later on Thursday evening Mosbacher wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations to #PGE, #GE and #Polimex for the Dolna Odra gas power plant project signing! This is another example of US firms committed to enhancing Poland's energy security and strong commercial ties between our two countries." (PAP)
