Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, the former Krakow Metropolitan, has died at the age of 89, deputy spokesman for the Krakow Archdiocese Father Piotr Studnicki announced on Tuesday.

Cardinal Macharski was the Krakow Metropolitan in the years 1979-2005. Earlier this post was held by Karol Wojtyla, elected pope in 1978. Macharski retired in 2005.

The cardinal was admitted to a Krakow hospital on June 12.

Pope Francis visited Cardinal Macharski, a close friend of the late Pope John Paul II, on his way to Czestochowa on July 28. (PAP)
