Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Thursday decorated Polish soldiers distinguished in lifesaving and rescue operations. The decorations were part of centenary observations of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, in which Polish forces halted a Europe-advancing Red Army.

Blaszczak said after the decorations that Polish soldiers were ready to carry aid whenever necessary and even when not on duty, and called this "heroism in times of peace".

He added that this readiness to help continued the tradition of the Polish soldiers who fought the Battle of Warsaw.

"I thank (Polish soldiers - PAP) for their attitude. And here I must draw a comparison to the great events of a hundred years ago, when soldiers of the reborn Polish Armed Forces stood on guard of the security of the reborn Republic. What distinguished them was uncommon bravery, courage and self-sacrifice," Blaszczak said.

On Thursday Blaszczak also opened a Battle of Warsaw exhibition in the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw. (PAP)
