Poland's southwestern city of Wroclaw hopes to win the European Green Capital title in 2019. The city is competing for the title, which is awarded by the European Commission, with 14 other European agglomerations.

The European Green Capital title is awarded to cities with populations above 100,000 in recognition of actions to support sustainable development and raise ecological standards.

On Saturday, a Wroclaw delegation composed of city officials and local NGOs arrived in Essen, Germany, to take part in that city's inauguration as European Green Capital 2017. Essen received the award for its persistence in restoring its image as a green city after industrial degradation.

Magdalena Okulowska of the Wroclaw mayor's office has told reporters that the European Green Capital title is above all associated with the idea of sustainable city development. She added that while applying for the title Wroclaw is stressing that it is 95 percent covered by a sewage system and that recent years have seen a 50 percent rise in the number of city transport commuters, accompanied by a dynamic development of the city's bike traffic.
