Polish police detained nine people suspected of acts of sabotage on behalf of the Russian security services, the prime minister has revealed.

Donald Tusk confirmed to the private broadcaster TVN24 on Monday, that some of the recent incidents in Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia were acts of sabotage carried out on behalf of Russia.

Those include an attempted arson attack at a Wroclaw paint plant in western Poland and an arson attack at an Ikea facility in Lithuania.

The suspects detained in Poland have been charged with "battery, arson and attempted arson," Tusk reported.

He added that the alleged offenders were hired Ukrainian, Belarusian and Polish citizens, some of them people from the criminal world.

Tusk said that the state was acting on this issue together with its neighbours and allies.

"I am really pleased with the efficiency of our services," he added.

In recent days, there have been several major fires across Poland, including a blaze at Warsaw's biggest retail hall that completely destroyed the shopping facility. (PAP)
