Following the Wall Street Journal's report that the next US administration could ask Ukraine to give up some of its regions to Russia to end the war, Szymon Holownia, speaker of the Polish lower house, has said that only Kyiv has sovereignty over its territory.

The New York-based newspaper wrote on Wednesday that US President-elect Donald Trump's plan for Ukraine may involve handing over a part of Ukrainian territory to Russia and forcing Kyiv to resign from its ambitions to join NATO.

"For the moment, the case is crystal clear, at least for me: The sole decision maker when it comes to Ukrainian territory is Ukraine. No-one has the right, neither international nor moral, to decide on behalf of the Ukrainian nation about the territorial integrity of their state," Holownia told PAP on Friday.

He said that he could not imagine a situation in which Russia invaded Poland and then Warsaw would be forced by someone to give up some of its regions to make peace.

He said "no arrangements concerning Ukraine's fate must be made 'over the head' of Ukraine, it is a question of fundamental respect, fundamental international law."

Holownia also said he was convinced that "the next US administration will approach the issue of the war responsibly."

"Unfortunately, the concept of 'peace at all costs' very often contains a story of injustice, of somehow yielding to evil," he added. (PAP)
