Poland's Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS), told PAP on Tuesday, that there is a significant increase in Covid-19 cases during the summer months.

The health ministry, on Tuesday, held a meeting that concerned the recent rise in Covid-19 infections.

Besides GIS, a national consultant for infectious diseases, Professor Milosz Parczewski, as well as representatives from the National Institute of Public Health, National Institute of Hygiene, and the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, were present at the meeting.

The head of GIS, Pawel Grzesiowski, told PAP that "a joint statement will be issued shortly and sent to offices and institutions."

"The wave of infections is rising. The count of how many people are infected is difficult, as we are not testing people, but it is a growing trend," the head of GIS said.

Also, there is a rising number of hospital admissions, however, those cases are not as severe as they were during the Covid-19 pandemic. "Older people and those from high-risk groups have to be aware of the fact that oxygen therapy or longer hospital stays will be necessary,"

"The first deaths have already been confirmed, unfortunately, amongst people who already had underlying health conditions, so we need to put the information forward that the wave has already reached Poland."

The daily infection rate at the start of July stood at 60, rising to 200 cases a day by the end of the month, and in August, the numbers had doubled to nearly 400.

By mid-August, the numbers multiplied again and stood at 820 a day.

To prevent the spread of Covid-19, the inspectorate recommends wearing protective masks, hand hygiene, and disinfecting surfaces. (PAP)
