Internal Security Agency (ABW) officers have detained a Belarusian national suspected of committing acts of espionage and sabotage as a member of an international organised crime group, the interior ministry spokesman has announced.

The court has agreed to detain the suspect for three months, Jacek Dobrzynski said on social media on Wednesday.

ABW said on its website that the Belarusian national had been detained in Warsaw and that he was suspected of setting fire to a facility located in the northern city of Gdansk.

"It is yet another detention in an investigation concerning the operation of an organised crime group which, on behalf of foreign special services, carried out acts of sabotage, in particular arson," ABW wrote in the statement.

In January and May, ABW detained Polish, Ukrainian and Belarusian suspects over acts of arson in Gdansk and the nearby Gdynia as well as in Marki near Warsaw. They were also preparing to commit similar acts in the southwestern city of Wroclaw.

The most recently detained Belarusian faces a life sentence. (PAP)
