Russia's war crimes in Ukraine will be on the agenda of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will run from January to June 2025, Poland's justice minister has announced.

"Until now, Polish prosecutors have questioned over 3,000 witnesses, who are on the Polish territory, who witnessed Russian crimes in Ukraine," Adam Bodnar, who is also Poland's prosecutor general, told a press conference on justice ministry's priorities for Poland's EU presidency, held in Warsaw on Thursday.

Bodnar added that Russia's responsibility for crimes committed in Ukraine will be one of his ministry's priorities during Poland's presidency of the EU Council and Poland's main role will be to activate talks between member states on this subject.

"A lot is happening as regards this subject... in the European Union and in the Council of Europe as well as in our prosecutor's office," he said, adding that
Polish prosecutors closely cooperate with their Ukrainian counterparts in identifying and documenting war crimes.

Bodnar also said that in early December, his deputy Maria Ejchart signed, on Poland's behalf, an agreement with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague on cooperation in the transfer of persons convicted by the ICC to Poland.

He announced that the topic of Russia's war crimes will also be raised at an informal meeting of EU justice ministers to be held in Warsaw on January 31. (PAP)
