Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, has offered condolences to the head of the charity World Central Kitchen following the death of seven of its volunteers, including a Pole, in an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip.

Damian Sobol was killed when the aid convoy he was travelling in was attacked on Monday. The strike also killed Australian and British citizens, one person with US-Canadian citizenship, and a Palestinian driver.

Sikorski told Jose Andres in a phone conversation on Wednesday that Poland "appreciates the work of your charity both in Ukraine and in Gaza," and thanked him for their work in difficult conditions.

Addressing the incident that led to the deaths of the seven, Sikorski said that it was a terrible situation and that Poland did not find the explanations provided by Israel satisfactory.

He added that Poland needed to know everything about the incident.

"If your convoy was deliberately targeted, then I think that Israel owes you and us an apology and compensation," Sikorski said in a video recording posted on the X platform.

Israel has accepted responsibility for the attack. Israel's armed forces expressed their "severe sorrow" over the incident, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it unintentional.

In a phone conversation on Tuesday with his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz, Sikorski said he was outraged and shocked, and called for an impartial inquiry. (PAP)
