Polish MEPs can decide for themselves whether to participate in the boycotted sittings of the EU Council held in Budapest during the ongoing Hungary's EU presidency, EU sources told PAP.

Several member states, including Austria and Denmark, have chosen to boycott informal meetings of the EU Council held in Budapest following Hungarian President Viktor Orban's unannounced visits to Ukraine, Moscow, and China in an attempted, so-called, 'peace mission'.

An EU diplomat told PAP on Friday that Polish ministers were free to decide on their own whether to attend the sittings. To date, Poland, as well as France and Germany, were represented only by low-rank officials.

The most significant message of disapproval was sent by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell who decided to convene the next meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels rather than in Budapest due to Hungary's stance on Ukraine.

Since the outbreak of the war, Hungary has repeatedly opposed EU actions against Russia, which has so far imposed 14 packages of sanctions on Russia in connection with the country's attack on Ukraine. (PAP)
