A second soldier died of his injuries on Wednesday following an accident on Tuesday during a military exercise on a training ground in northern Poland.

The soldier was declared dead at a hospital in the coastal city of Szczecin on Wednesday afternoon. He was one of two servicemen run over by an infantry fighting vehicle during an exercise at the Drawsko Pomorskie training area in northwestern Poland on Tuesday morning.

Jacek Piotrowski, a spokesman for the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade, told PAP on Tuesday that the accident had occurred during a routine exercise. He said the exercise was not related to Nato's ongoing Dragon-24 manoeuvres, part of the alliance's larger Steadfast Defender-24 exercise. The other soldier involved was killed at the scene.

"We announce with sadness that in the afternoon of March 6 (Wednesday) in a hospital in Szczecin, the second soldier of the 1st Armoured Brigade wounded in an unfortunate accident died surrounded by the support of family and soldiers," the man's brigade said. (PAP)
