The Israeli army confirmed on Monday the death of Polish-Israeli historian and custodian of Polish-Jewish dialogue Alex Dancyg who was being held hostage by Hamas militants.

The probable place of confinement was Chan Junus City where Dancyg was being kept with another hostage Jagew Buchstawa.

The Israeli army said that confirmation of their deaths was based on new intelligence, they did not release any further details.

Pawel Wronski, the foreign affairs spokesman, said during a press conference on Monday, that the ministry is in the process of final verification of Dancyg's death, but it appears to be a fact, he added.

Alex Dancyg was a Polish and Israeli national, born in Warsaw in 1948. He was a historian who for decades was at the heart of Polish-Jewish dialogue and had worked at the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem.

He lived on the Kibbutz Nir Oz, close to the Gaza Strip border, where he was seized by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023. (PAP)
