The first consultations between the governments of Poland and Germany since 2018 were held in Warsaw on Tuesday.
During a press conference following the meeting, Scholz said that Germany "wants a strong Polish voice in Europe… but in order to shape a good future, a clear view of the past is needed."
He added: "We Germans caused immeasurable suffering to Poland during the Second World War, and we are aware of our guilt and responsibility for the millions of victims of the German occupation.
"Therefore, Germany will try to implement support for the survivors of the occupation," he announced.
According to him, "to this end, the Federal Cabinet has decided to create a memorial in Berlin for the Polish victims of the Second World War and the Nazi occupation," which will be "a visible sign against oblivion and a warning for the future." (PAP)
