Poland and the US have signed a direct loan agreement within the framework of the Foreign Military Financing programme, Poland's defence ministry reported on Monday.

"This is the second loan provided by the US government to Poland in recent times," the ministry wrote. "Foreign Military Financing funds are only allocated to select US allies with whom the US has close defence cooperation."

It added that the money will allow the strengthening of Poland's defence capabilities through the purchase of US air and missile defence systems.

According to the ministry, favourable terms of the agreement are "a sign of the continuously developing strategic relationship between Poland and the US."

"The United States remains our main foreign partner in the modernisation of the Polish Armed Forces, including the acquisition of Patriot and HIMARS air defence systems, Abrams tanks, and F-35 aircraft." (PAP)
