The Polish defence minister has said the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba's decision to step down was a "surprise" for him.

Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, the defence minister, said on Wednesday that he did not know what was behind Kuleba's resignation. He assumed, however, that the move might have been motivated by "human fatigue."

"The time that has passed since the beginning of the war makes (...) human fatigue take a heavy toll, that's for sure. I observed the Ukrainian delegation during the NATO summit (...), and it's evident that it requires much effort."

Kuleba's announcement about stepping down appeared in a handwritten letter on Wednesday. The move came amidst a broader reshuffling of Ukraine's cabinet announced by the country's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Tuesday. In a late-night video address, Zelensky said that the cabinet reset is necessary in preparation for "an extremely important autumn." Ukraine's ruling party announced that over half of the cabinet is to be changed this week.

Dmytro Kuleba served as the chief of Ukrainian diplomacy since 2020. During this time he held numerous diplomatic visits to Poland. His most recent arrival was in late August when he attended the Poland of the Future campus, an event consisting of political debates organised by Poland's main governing party, the centrist Civic Platform.
